Environmental policy
Business IT Online is committed to leading the industry in minimising the impact of its activities on the environment. The key points of our strategy to achieve this are:
> | Minimise waste by evaluating operations and ensuring they are as efficient as possible. |
> | Minimise emissions generated by our activities by designing processes and using equipment that are energy efficient. |
> | Actively promote recycling and activities that minimise waste both internally and amongst our customers and suppliers. |
> | Source and promote a product range to minimise the environmental impact of both production and distribution. |
> | Meet or exceed all the environmental legislation that relates to the company. |
Ethical sourcing policy
Because we care about the people involved in making our products we have the following ethical sourcing policy in place:
> | It is unacceptable to use forced, bonded or involuntary prison labour. |
> | Suppliers should not employ children below 16 years of age. |
> | Workers must be paid a fair, living wage for the type of work they undertake. This must meet national legal or industry standards as a minimum. Deduction of wages as a disciplinary measure shall not be permitted. |
> | Workers shall not be required to work in excess of 48 hours/week. All overtime must be voluntary and paid at a premium rate. |
> | Harsh or inhumane treatment whether physical, sexual or verbal is prohibited. |
> | Discrimination in hiring based on race, caste, national origin, religion, disability, gender, age, sex, orientation, union membership or political affiliation is unacceptable. |
> | Suppliers should demonstrate care and concern for the physical environment in which they operate. A safe and hygienic working environment shall be provided with adequate steps taken to prevent accidents and injury to health. Workers shall receive regular and recorded health and safety training. Workers shall be provided with clean toilet facilities, access to fresh water and sanitary storage areas for food. |
Battery take-back scheme
As a retailer of batteries, we comply with the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations.
Under the Waste Battery Regulations, Business IT Online offer a take-back scheme for all portable waste batteries. You may bring your batteries, in person, to our business premises and we will ensure they are disposed of correctly. Our business premises address can be found here. Please do not send batteries by post.
Alternatively, you can find your local waste portable battery recycling facility at www.recyclenow.co.uk. Most supermarkets and shops that sell batteries will have collection bins for used batteries, and some town halls, libraries or schools may also set up collection points. You may find these options more accessible.
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) take-back scheme
As a retailer of electrical and electronic equipment, we comply with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations.
Under the WEEE Regulations, Business IT Online offer a take-back scheme for all household electrical items. Unwanted electrical equipment is the UKs fastest growing type of waste, and sending it to landfill causes lead and other toxins can leak out and cause soil and water contamination, harming wildlife and human health.
Fortunately, many electrical items can now be repaired or recycled. That's why we're offering free recycling on a like-for-like basis - so when you buy a new item from us, we will make sure your old model is taken care of.
If you’re not sure whether your electrical item can be recycled, have a look for the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol on the packaging, or on the item itself. If the symbol appears on the replacement item, this is also an indication that the old model should be recycled.
The WEEE Directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of waste electricals. In the UK, that means retailers like us must offer all customers buying new equipment free take-back for their old electricals.
